Awaregio – Conserving Resources with Water Reuse

As a permanently available resource, treated wastewater is too valuable to be discharged into the environment, especially in times of climate change. With Regulation (EU) 2020/741, minimum requirements for water reuse are now established, which will also become valid in Germany from June 26, 2023.

Under the leadership of FiW e.V., the BMBF pilot project awaregio demonstrated the development of innovative key components for the reuse of wastewater, wastewater-derived nutrients, and energy in agriculture, aquaculture, and for drinking water substitution. This project also opened new market opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in economically weaker regions.
