Launch of the ecReUse Soth Africa research project

We are pleased to announce the approval of our new R&D project, “Enhancing Resource Utilization Efficiency in South Africa through Water Reuse and Sustainable Energy Production at Wastewater Treatment Plants”, short “ecReUse”.

Co-financed by the BMUV, the ecReUse project aims to enhance water and energy security by optimizing the use of existing resources. Through the restructuring of a wastewater treatment plant in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province, the project seeks to reduce energy consumption, generate biogas for energy production, and implement advanced water treatment technologies. These measures will enable the safe reuse of treated water in industrial applications and agriculture, including food production.

TERRA URBANA will assess the technological and conceptual feasibility of agricultural water reuse by establishing and operating a hydroponic demonstration system at the wastewater treatment plant. Furthermore, key socio-ecological and economic factors critical for scaling will be identified.

We highly appreciate the collaboration with our research partners and international stakeholders and look forward to a productive partnership.
